Hello, CPS Student Teachers and Student Teacher Prospects:

We have news about an exciting new program through the Chicago Public Schools’ Teacher Housing Resource Center to improve the quality of the student teaching experience for education majors.

The CPS Teacher Housing Resource Center has identified six great 2-bedroom apartments in the Rogers Park community, located on Chicago’s North lakefront (the most northern Lake Michigan beach in Chicago is Juneway beach, one block from this apartment building). We are looking for a few excellent student teachers to live in the Rogers Park community while they’re student teaching in the CPS, and also participate in a series of community orientation workshops led by the Rogers Park Community Development Corporation to help guide them to understand the community context in which CPS students live.

These apartments are the most prime 6 apartments (facing east with a view down a residential street of primarily single-family homes) in a building of a total 25 apartments that have undergone a complete gut-rehab.

CPS has furnished each apartment and provides all utilities including internet capability for one affordable monthly cost to you: $350 per month per student teacher. Each apartment will have a single bedroom per student teacher; and one full bath, a living-room, dining-room and kitchen to share. Only street parking is available, so we are encouraging all selected student teacher residents to exclusively use public and bicycle transportation and which are very convenient to this apartment building.

Those interested in participating, in addition to the requirements you have already met the requirements to become a CPS student teacher, you will also be asked to write a 500-word essay discussing your interest in an urban public school internship, your teaching philosophy and your plans for a career in public education.
